Growing up, one of my favorite memories was the week each summer that I got to visit my Grammy’s house in Cincinnati. Taking a week off from work, she was completely dedicated to giving me her undivided attention and allowed me to plan the weeklong visit! As always, we ended up in her kitchen making all kinds of cakes and cookies since there was nothing I loved more than baking with my Grammy. She taught me everything there was to know about baking...measuring ingredients, reading a recipe, and baking each item to perfection! I was only 6 when Grammy and I developed our dream to someday open a bakery, which we referred to as the “Grammy and Me Bakery”
That peaceful summer filled with magnificent dreams was the last mention of our future bakery, as my Grammy battled the disease known as cancer. Lymphoma got the best of her and my yearly summer visits deteriorated right along with my Grammy. Grammy passed away in 2005, but I never lost sight of the dream to open the bakery we had created during those special summers.
In honor of my Grammy, Phyllis Layton Perry, I have renamed my bakery “The Flying Pig: Bakery & Custom Cakes.” When we officially launch as a storefront, we will sell our unique Flying Pig Pops to customers and donate $1.00 from each pig pop to Leukemia/Lymphoma Research in her honor!
